Plan ahead: Install PS4 firmware v1.5 to a USB stick right now

If you're getting a PS4 this Friday, here's a handy tip: Copy the necessary version 1.5 firmware update onto a USB stick and install it on your console that way. It's probably not the best idea to try and access Sony's servers while swarms of other people are trying to do the same thing on launch day.

Simply head over to this PlayStation page and download the firmware. Then go into your USB stick and create a "PS4" folder and an "UPDATE" folder inside of that. Now it's simply a matter of copying the 308MB 859MB in files over to your USB stic stick - which needs to have 1GB of free space - and you're good to go.

Speaking of launch, today our PS4 review went live, as did reviews on some of the more high-profile launch games like Killzone: Shadow Fall, Knack, Resogun and Contrast. We'll continue to roll out coverage on the launch of the PS4, so keep an eye on this link for new content as it's made available.

Cutler throws 4 picks, 'O' still learning

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- Henry Melton raised his hands and slapped at a Jay Cutler pass, only to send it wobbling off its trajectory and float gently back into his paws for an interception and touchdown. "I always tell Jay before practice, ‘Hey, I'm gonna get a couple today,'" Melton said. The defense feasted on that and more, as the front four batted down several passes -- with at least two resulting in interceptions -- as Cutler tossed four interceptions on Tuesday, providing a glimpse of just how much work needs to be done before the offense is truly regular-season ready.

Game over for Zynga? Firm loses 25 percent of daily active users in one quarter

It's been a rough year for Zynga, which ousted founder Mark Pincus earlier this month.

In its latest earnings statement filed Thursday with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Zynga reported the number of daily average users (DAU) dropped to 39 million in the second quarter of 2013—the lowest ever since the company began keeping track. Last quarter, the DAU fell to the then-lowest record, 52 million users. The fall to 39 million means that 25 percent of its daily user base stopped using Zynga products in just one quarter.

Not surprisingly, Zynga’s bottom line fell too. The company sustained a net loss of $15.8 million in Q2 2013. (Last quarter, the gaming firm profited just $4.1 million.) The market wasn’t too thrilled with these numbers: in after-hours trading, Zynga’s stock price plummeted by nearly 15 percent.

The once top-dog has gone through a bit of a rough patch during the last year. In the summer of 2012, the company quickly lost a bunch of executives and managers. That October, the company announced that it had overpaid for OMGPOP (maker of Draw Something). More recently, Mark Pincus, the company’s founder, was ousted as CEO in early July 2013. Then Zynga suddenly shut down OMGPOP last month as well.

Alan Turing Likely To Be Given Posthumous Pardon

pegdhcp writes with news that the UK government has signaled its intent to support a bill that would issue a posthumous pardon to Alan Turing, who is known for his work in defeating the German Enigma code machines in World War II and widely considered the father of computer science. Turing was charged with and convicted of "gross indecency" in 1952 for being gay. He was sentenced to chemical castration, and he committed suicide two years later. "The announcement marks a change of heart by the government, which declined last year to grant pardons to the 49,000 gay men, now dead, who were convicted under the 1885 Criminal Law Amendment Act. They include Oscar Wilde. ... [Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon] told peers: "Alan Turing himself believed that homosexual activity would be made legal by a royal commission. In fact, appropriately, it was parliament which decriminalized the activity for which he was convicted. The government are very aware of the calls to pardon Turing, given his outstanding achievements, and have great sympathy with this objective That is why the government believe it is right that parliament should be free to respond to this bill in whatever way its conscience dictates and in whatever way it so wills."
